Why has the Lottery been accused of systemic racism after the Powerball?

With the Powerball draw set to take headlines in the coming days, there are worrying suggestions that the system is racially biased.

On Wednesday CNN ran a news piece where critics of the system were interviewed.

The crux of the issue is that the Powerball system targets underfunded black communities across the United States of America.

A chance to win life-changing money targets poor people

There is no doubt that there is a somewhat predatory element to lottery ticket selling.

You're always going to have more success selling the dream of instant riches in poorer communities who are desperate for life-changing money, rather than areas where people are already well off.

In the CNN report, researchers explained that despite the low chances of winning, state lottery companies aggressively market their games to low-income communities.

"These communities are disproportionately made up of black people," CN's Nicquel Terry Ellis wrote.

"Critics say the consequence is that marginalized people will be driven into deeper debt by a system that is transferring wealth out of their communities."

Research has continued to highlight the fact that low-income groups paying a much larger chunk of their limited resources than wealthier communities.
